The New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers are, according to rumors, looking to add a 3rd team in the trade that could take ‘Melo to California.

The Knicks have already shown their interest in trading Anthony to LA, and the Clippers aren’t willing to trade any player from their Big 3 (CP3, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan). The players that could be involved in this deal are JJ Redick, Jamal Crawford and Austin Rivers.

Doc Rivers talked about having to trade his son, Austin, to get Carmelo:

“If you think you can make your team better, you make your team better. That’s my job. Listen, I would trade anyone. You have to be willing to do that, so – and he would be one of them, and any of them would be one. But I don’t want to trade any of our guys. I like our team.”

But why is there a need of a 3rd team?

“Various factors have contributed to the search for a third trade partner. If Jamal Crawford were to be involved in a trade, the Knicks wouldn’t want to absorb the three years and $42MM left on his contract after 2016/17. What’s more, Anthony’s 15% trade kicker would be difficult for Los Angeles to accommodate, since the team is nearing its hard cap.” – Sources said.

If Crawford gets included in the deal, he could land in NY, place where he played before getting traded to GSW for Al Harrington.

Austin Rivers came to LA after being traded to Boston (In the deal that took Jeff Green to Memphis), and then went to California in a deal that involved the Celtics, the Clippers and the Suns (Chris Douglas-Roberts, Shavlik Randolph and Reggie Bullock were also on the move). This season, the Guard is averaging 11.9 PPG, 2.6 APG and 2 RPG (8.1 PPG, 2.1 APG, 1.9 RPG throughout his career), and in Januray alone he is starting and averaging 18.4 PPG, 4.3 APG and 3 RPG in 35.7 MPG.

The Clippers acquired JJ Redick from the Bucks, sending a 2nd Round Pick to Milwaukee (This trade also took Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler from LA to Phoenix for Jared Dudley).

How did ‘Melo ended up in NY?

“The Knicks also got guards Chauncey Billups and Anthony Carter, and forwards Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams from Denver. New York dealt forwards Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari, guard Raymond Felton and center Timofey Mozgov to the Nuggets. New York also shipped centers Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph to Minnesota for forward Corey Brewer. Denver acquired center Kosta Koufos from Minnesota, plus New York’s first-round draft pick in 2014, second-round picks in 2012 and 2013 and cash.” – Sources remember.
